- 'Gendered Experiences of COVID-19: Women, Labour, and Informal Sector' by Vibhuti Patel | EPW Engage
Gendered experiences of COVID-19 are shaped by the intersection of inequalities in the labour markets, intrahousehold power relations during stay-at-home and lockdown orders in the matters concerning care, stress and domestic violence; working from home along with housework, gendered experiences of household responsibilities, domestic violence, sexual violence and child sexual abuse in camps/shelter homes, mental health issues, personal care and frontline healthcare service to the family members.

- '15th Finance Commission recommendations are overtly pro-urban, to 'hit' federal spirit' by Tikender Singh Panwar | Counterview
The paranoia over the collection of property tax and linking it to availing the grant must be given up. No doubt that the property tax is one of the important sources of resource mobilization in the municipalities but to over centralize it would be erroneous. The provision for asking the state governments to decide the property tax floor area rate is entirely flawed.
- 'Need for Feminism in Climate Decision-Making – Dr Anjal Prakash' by Simi Mehta, Anshula Mehta and Nishi Verma | IMPRI
“Masculine development projects have only extracted as much as they can from nature and its elements; there is a need for more feminism in decision making.”- Dr Anjal Prakash at a #WebPolicyTalk - 'Time for an eco-friendly development model' by Gurinder Kaur and Arjun Kumar | OpinionExpress.in
An increase in natural disasters in India is a result of climate change, but an increase in their impact is due to overexploitation of natural resources. The Centre and State Governments have been pursuing pro-corporate development by ignoring environmental norms. Uttarakhand is inviting climatic tragedies and destroying its beauty by regularly flouting the Environmental Impact Assessment Laws to build a 900-km-long stretch of the Char Dham route.
- 'Intersectoral Convergence in Disaster Resilience is Fundamental -Ranjan Borah' by Simi Mehta, Sunidhi Agarwal, Nishi Verma | IMPRI
At a #WebPolicyTalk, Ranjan Borah highlighted that about 465 households had been impacted due to Chamoli floods in the 12 upper regions of Joshimath. The statistics are based on the report on February 18, 2021, by the Government of Uttarakhand’s State control room. He further acknowledged the response activities being carried out by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Personnel in this challenging scenario. He said, in technical terms, the incident of February 7, 2021, is the Glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). Similar GLOF incidents have occurred in the past, as evident from the Kedarnath floods.
- 'Challenges of #AatmaNirbhar cities and Union budget 2021-22' by Soumyadip Chattopadhyay and Arjun Kumar | Counterview
Institutional reforms are also crucial both for involving the private sector in the provision and expansion of improved urban infrastructure. Such reform should start with an explicit focus on empowering the city governments by enhancing their capabilities to develop and implement their strategies that are feasible and effective in their local contexts. Equal importance should be accorded to three Fs – functions, funds and functionaries to exploit the potential of urbanisation to produce sustainable and inclusive growth and development in the New Normal.
- 'Gendered Dimensions and Impacts of Suicide Bereavement: Exploring Lived Experiences' by Simi Mehta, Anshula Mehta, Sunidhi Agarwal | IMPRI
Gender roles, gender identity, normative ideas of masculinity have a great influence on suicide bereavement. There is considerable victim-blaming and shaming, especially of wives who lose husbands to suicide. Due to the modern family’s hetero-patriarchal structure, a woman (wife or daughter) is perceived as the custodian of culture and tradition and, upholder of the family honor. The suicide of a husband or a father causes people to question this role. In cases of suicide by children, the mother is often blamed for not being a responsible parent. Another interesting observation is that a mother who dies of suicide is perceived as being irresponsible, whereas a father’s suicide is attributed to other reasonable causes. - Nandini Murali at a #WebPolicyTalk
- 'Union Budget 2021-22: Reimagining Cities amidst COVID-19 Pandemic' by Soumyadip Chattopadhyay and Arjun Kumar | Delhi Post
The budget has responded to the challenges of COVID-19, but whether this response is comprehensive and enough can only be seen through an understanding of micro-governance of the allocations.
- 'Education, Employability & Employment: Understanding the Intersection' by Arjun Kumar and Ritika Gupta | Counterview
Much of professional education has emphasized theory but not practice. Additionally they should recognize their responsibility towards society. At a #WebPolicyTalk, Sudheesh Venkatesh argues for education of practice and social responsibility to resolve the question of employability. A focus on vocational education, wherein tools like apprenticeships and internships are utilized, can also increase employability. He argues that the industry has to do its part in resolving the thorny issue; it cannot be a mute bystander.
